Why I Chose to Specialize in Special Needs Dentistry

Special Needs Dentistry is a unique and deeply rewarding field where medicine, dentistry, and advocacy come together. It requires not only clinical expertise but also compassion, empathy, and a holistic approach to patient care. In this specialty, we act as dental physicians rather than just dental surgeons, managing patients with complex medical, intellectual, and social needs.

I first discovered Special Needs Dentistry as a recognized specialty during my second year of my master’s degree at the University of Western Australia (UWA). By that point, it already felt like my true calling. This realization led me to move from Perth to Melbourne to pursue the Doctor of Clinical Dentistry at the University of Melbourne, one of the most well-established postgraduate programs in this field.

During my master’s research on oral cancer incidence in regional areas, I encountered a comment from a general dentist working in a regional/rural area, which left a lasting impression. They emphasized how medically compromised patients can die from dental infections due to the lack of specialists equipped to manage their care. This reinforced my commitment to addressing oral health inequalities and inspired me to specialize in this field.

My passion for treating vulnerable populations has only grown over time. Beyond providing care, I am dedicated to teaching and inspiring others to recognize the importance of this specialty. I took the lead in shaping the future of Special Needs Dentistry by serving as the Convenor of the Postgraduate Special Needs Dentistry Program at the University of Melbourne, where I mentor and train the next generation of specialists.

Special Needs Dentistry is about more than just treating teeth—it involves managing medically complex cases, supporting individuals with intellectual and physical disabilities, and navigating psychiatric and social challenges. Not every case requires general anesthesia. Sometimes, rapport-building, patience, and time are the most valuable tools we can offer.

Our role extends beyond clinical treatment—we consider the whole patient, understanding their medical and psychosocial background in the context of dentistry. Special Needs Dentistry is a challenging yet fulfilling specialty that allows me to make a meaningful difference in patients' lives. It is a career driven by social responsibility, advocacy, and a commitment to improving healthcare accessibility for those who need it most.
