How often do you need to see a dentist?

Recall visits are based on the risk of dental disease, with recommended times for patients with special needs as outlined by the Australian Research Centre for Population Oral Health (ARCPOH). These are general guidelines and should be tailored to each individual’s needs.

  • 3-monthly: For individuals with high risk or urgent care needs, those requiring optimal oral health maintenance to avoid complex issues, including:

    • People on bone-modifying medications (e.g., Fosamax, Prolia)
    • Individuals with heart conditions requiring antibiotic prophylaxis
    • Those with bleeding disorders
    • People who are PEG-fed and at risk of aspiration pneumonia
    • Individuals with rapidly progressing oral diseases
  • 6-monthly: For those at moderate risk, where general health is fair to good, but oral health is compromised due to:

    • Inability to care for themselves (e.g., physical or cognitive challenges)
    • Carers having difficulty providing adequate care (this may involve addressing both carer and patient issues)
  • Once a year: For individuals with low risk, who have good general and oral health but need regular follow-ups to maintain it.

    • This also includes people without teeth, to monitor oral mucosal health and any potential issues with dentures.
