Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous Oxide, commonly known as "laughing gas," is a safe and effective sedative used in dental treatments to help reduce anxiety and promote relaxation. It is inhaled through a mask placed over your nose, combined with oxygen. The gas can make you feel euphoric, lightheaded, and, in some cases, reduce pain. Your dentist will monitor your heart rate and oxygen levels throughout the procedure to ensure your safety.

Before treatment, avoid eating a heavy meal and stop eating or drinking at least 2 hours prior. A responsible adult must accompany you to and from your appointment. After the procedure, avoid heavy meals for 3 hours and have an adult care for you for 8 hours.

Side effects are rare but can include nausea, dizziness, headaches, or fatigue. More severe side effects are uncommon, but if they occur, the nitrous oxide will be stopped immediately. Some people may also experience memory issues or distortions in sound. Nitrous oxide should be avoided if you have certain health conditions like respiratory diseases, recent eye or ear surgery, or issues with vitamin B12. It should be used cautiously in pregnant individuals or those with immune-compromising conditions.

For most people, the effects wear off quickly after the treatment, and you should feel back to normal shortly afterward. If you experience any prolonged symptoms or discomfort, seek medical attention.
