Preventive Care
At All Ability Dental, prevention is central to everything we do.
We place great importance on supporting you in maintaining good daily oral care at home, and on educating both you and your carers about how oral health issues develop.
Disability, chronic conditions, and long-term medication use can increase the risk of certain oral diseases. Common conditions we encounter include tooth decay (dental caries), gum diseases (gingivitis and periodontitis), oral thrush, tooth wear, and teeth grinding.
By managing these conditions, we help prevent pain, infections, and tooth loss, while also preserving speech, chewing ability, self-esteem, and overall quality of life. Reducing bacteria in the mouth also lowers the risk of pneumonia, particularly for those with high-risk conditions, such as swallowing disorders or chronic lung diseases.
Most oral health issues are linked to lifestyle and often emerge earlier than other diseases with similar risk factors, such as diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular disease, and dementia. Improving oral health also addresses these broader risk factors, supporting overall wellness.
Many of our patients find dental procedures challenging to tolerate, which can lead to higher costs and greater difficulty accessing treatment, especially if sedation or general anaesthesia is needed. Additionally, some patients may face a higher risk of serious complications, such as bleeding or osteonecrosis, particularly when extractions are required. By focusing on preventive care, we can reduce the need for more invasive treatments and their associated costs.
